On a good day, I can complete a new user setup in 2 hours and a virus recovery in 4 hours (these times rely on my work load).

For example, Engineering images have the bulk of AutoCAD installed, cutting out roughly an hour of setup time, the AutoCAD support tech simply registers the software and configures the user.

I then break it down further and have multiple versions of the base image based on the software required. Those images include the drivers, settings and company wide required software such as adobe, java and MS office. I create base images for each model of computer we support. I store those images on my WDS and can then use the Windows Setup on my WDS to boot and “install” those images, or I can boot to the Win7PXE image that we are about to make and “apply” the image to the drive, much like you would do with Clonezilla or Ghost. You can capture an image of nearly any machine (I have not been able to do Wyse thin clients due to the lack of on board memory). If you use ImageX, a DOS based utility built into the WDS server, there is no need for Sysprep. WDS gives you capture tools right out of the box, but you have to Sysprep them first. The idea behind this build is simple I wanted to be able to boot a GUI from my WDS that allowed me to capture images on computers without having to Sysprep the machine first.

You can do this on a 64 bit win7 machine, but you will have to install WAIK and ImageX. The project will be built on the WDS to simplify the process as much as possible, so make sure you have access to that server. This tutorial assumes that you have a WDS setup and functioning, if you don’t, you will need to do that first. Think of this as a syllabus and the lesson will come after. This first part is meant to be an over view, if you don’t understand something, don’t worry, I will cover it in more detail below.
